2021 Reading List
In 2017 I hit a new low with reading. I believe that year I read eight books, including the Marvel Civil War graphic novel. That felt very low for a man trying to become an author. So the next year, 2018, my goal was one book a month, and I made it to 17, and it still felt like too low of a number. In 2019 I asked Tayler to join in with me and attempt to read a book a week between the two of us, we go to 59 books that year, and 78 in 2020. This year we made it to 77, and it is the first year we read less than the year before (I am totally ok with this, read on for why, I also blame the Dr. Death, Office Ladies, Nateland, and Intentionally Blank podcasts for slowing me down a bit). I posted this on Facebook, but I thought my blog might be a better place to dive into what we are doing and why.
Reading has always been a personal hobby of mine. I love reading, I love the thought that a person can create an entire world in their head, translate that idea to paper and entertain me for hours. There have also been studies that show that reading is good for several mental, emotional, and intellectual reasons, but I don’t really care about those. I simply love to read. One of my happiest moments throughout the day is right before bedtime when my four-year-old uses reading as an excuse to get a few extra minutes of “playtime”. I always tell her only one book somehow she convinces me to read two or three or four. I hope that she can keep tricking me because I love every minute of it.
So, since reading is a hobby, I do it guilt-free. You will notice the entire Harry Potter series listed, I reread it every year. I have read YA novels, true crime, self-help, and lots and lots of sci-fi and fantasy. I let myself give up after 100 pages if I am not interested because I want to enjoy reading. I do my best to read outside of my comfort zone, kind of. I will always read what I want to. This year I spent a lot of time reading about serial killers, I don’t know what that says about my mental health, so there is more true crime than usual. So here is our list, with a few notes. Please let me know your recommendations for 2022, I am looking for anything. You can find me on twitter @L0stTurkey, Instagram l0stturkey, and facebook L0stTurkey. I look forward to hearing from you!
